Menopause may be mysterious, unwelcome, or unplanned for, but it’s also natural and inevitable (for some), and worth embracing with grace. This season, like many others, brings about various changes and our skin is one area that is often affected. As hormone levels fluctuate, menopause can lead to side effects that impact the skin’s health and appearance.

Whether you’re in the throes of menopause or decades away, fear not, you’re in good company (51% of the population!) and together we can turn this dreaded phase into a transformative journey. Let’s dive in and discover the side effects and common skin conditions of menopause, and the best ways to treat them.

Side Effects of Menopause on Skin: During menopause, the body experiences a decrease in estrogen production, leading to several changes in the skin. Some common side effects include:

Dryness and Loss of Elasticity: Reduced estrogen levels can result in decreased oil production, leading to dry and dehydrated skin. Additionally, the loss of elasticity can contribute to sagging and the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. Hydration is key–inside and out!

Thin, Fragile Skin: Menopause can cause a decrease in collagen and elastin production, resulting in thinner and more fragile skin, that’s more prone to bruising and slower to heal.

Uneven Skin Tone: Hormonal fluctuations can lead to an increase in pigmentation issues such as dark spots or uneven skin tone. Microneedling and chemical peels can help even skin tone.

Common Skin Conditions during Menopause:

Hot Flashes and Redness: Menopausal hot flashes can cause temporary redness and flushing of the skin. This can be managed through lifestyle changes and the use of cooling facial mists or soothing skincare products. Avoid caffeine and alcohol as these can make hot flashes worse.

Acne and Breakouts: Hormonal imbalances during menopause can trigger acne and breakouts, especially along the jawline and chin. Gentle and targeted skincare routines can help manage these issues.

Skin Sensitivity: Menopausal skin can become more sensitive and reactive, leading to increased irritation and redness. Opting for gentle and fragrance-free skincare products can help soothe and protect the skin.

Treating Menopausal Skin with Cosmetic Procedures and Beauty Treatments:
Laser and Light Therapies: Laser treatments and red light therapy can stimulate collagen production, improve skin texture, and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and pigmentation issues. Microneedling can help address sun damage, uneven skin tone, and fine lines and wrinkles.

Chemical Peels: Chemical peels can effectively exfoliate the skin, reduce fine lines, and improve overall skin texture. They can also help with pigmentation issues and promote a more youthful appearance.

Creating a Menopausal Skin Care Regimen (OR Preventing Damage and Loss):
Hydration is Key: Opt for hydrating cleansers, moisturizers, and serums that replenish the skin’s moisture barrier. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid and ceramides.

Sun Protection: Protect your skin from further damage by using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Reapply every two hours, especially when exposed to direct sunlight.

Antioxidant Power: Incorporate products rich in antioxidants like vitamin C and E to help combat free radicals and promote healthy skin.

Retinoids and Peptides: Consider using retinoids to stimulate collagen production and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Peptides can also help improve skin firmness and elasticity.

Microneedling

If you’ve considered Botox or even a facelift, but the expense, botulism, and scalpel have you hiding your face, Microneedling may be the answer to your prayers. With zero downtime and no risks from anesthesia or a hospital stay, Microneedling lifts and tightens the skin and can erase surface imperfections and signs of aging. Promoted by the dermatologists at Yale Medicine Plastic Surgery, microneedling is a safe, effective way to improve skin’s appearance and produce results for clients.

What Does It Do?

Using a special pen outfitted with micro-needles, tiny micro-channels are created over the surface of the skin. These micro-channels stimulate the skin’s natural healing response, increasing collagen production and elastin (the proteins in our skin that give it tone and bounce, and naturally deteriorate with age). As a result of the micro-channel healing, the skin generates a new layer of tissue that is firmer and more youthful looking.

“I started seeing a difference in my complexion five days after the first session. After the second session, my skin tone is even better, my make-up goes on smoother, and I’m seeing a difference in my fine lines and childhood scars from chickenpox. I’m definitely microneedling my stomach to erase stretch marks and tighten my tummy.” – F. Torres (2023)

Microneedling Improves the Appearance of:

  • Aging
  • Surface scars from acne or textural irregularities and surgeries
  • Stretch marks
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Hair loss and Alopecia
  • Enlarged pores
  • UV damage
  • Rosacea, hyperpigmentation, and Melasma
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Loose, sagging skin
  • Dull, dehydrated skin

By promoting collagen and elastin production, Microneedling generates tighter, smoother, more youthful skin that’s better hydrated and receptive to quality skin care products (increasing the absorption and rate of result). Additionally, pores are minimized, skin tone is evened out, and hair growth is stimulated.

How Does It Work?

After a cleansing process (facial for the face or otherwise for the body) and dual applications of lidocaine to reduce discomfort, the experts at Firecracker will apply hyaluronic acid serum and gently move the top-of-the-line Dr. Pen M8 Microneedling Pen over the skin. After fully covering and treating the area, a jelly mask is applied and left to sit for better absorption of the serum and products. Every client leaves with post-care instructions and products.

Unlike lasers, which may affect skin pigmentation, particularly in individuals with darker skin tone, Microneedling improves skin tone without affecting pigmentation.

Firecracker Beauty Spa is committed to only using and carrying premium products; the Dr. Pen M8 is the most powerful and effective auto micro-needle device on the market so our clients get the best, fastest results available.

How Many Sessions Will I Need and When Will I See Results?

Most clients require three sessions, two to three weeks apart for their first treatment. Maintenance sessions may be done but unlike Botox, which wears off after time and must be redone on a regular basis with more and more injections required each time, Microneedling actually promotes healthier skin growth!

Results become evident after the first week of your first session. Clients report an improvement in their complexion with smoother, firmer, more evenly toned skin before the second session. Because Microneedling works by promoting the natural production of elastin and collagen, improvements continue up to a year after the final session as your skin continues the “healing process” generated by your treatment!

Microneedling Isn’t Just For The Face!

Post-pregnancy stretch marks or loose skin resulting from significant weight loss can be tightened and smoothed with Microneedling, so skip the tummy tuck and Microneedle those stretch marks and C-section scars away! It may also help with hair growth for those with Alopecia.
